Good news for all cat lovers – your pet can literally cure you! Since the media has published some statements claiming that cats cause mental illnesses, we have decided to defense our little furry friends, who explicitly bring a lot of joy to every of us.
Namely, the whole disturbance was about a parasite “Toxoplasma gondii”, which could be one of the provocateurs of mental disorder, and even schizophrenia. However, this theory is new and controversial, and should be considered trivial.
How this parasite is actually dangerous remains to be seen in the results of a future research. We are here to deal with some other studies which have proven that cats are definitely guardians of our health.
A research conducted at the University of Minnesota, found that people owning cats have a lower risk of heart attack. After 10 years of research, has been proven that cat owners have a 30 percent lower risk of stroke compared to people who do not have these animals.
Reducing the risk of a heart attack by 30 percent is not a joke, and indeed we should be thankful for our pets. Namely, cat owners have lower blood pressure, lower stress levels and lower heart rate than those who do not have cats.
In addition to reducing the risk of a heart attack, cats stimulate the secretion of oxytocin in the brain. This hormone is important for the organism because it causes pleasure and is also called the hormone of love and happiness. Its secretion has a healing effect on the human body.

Cats also enhance the secretion of serotonin and dopamine, which reduces the stress and stabilize the operation of our immune system.
Various studies have revealed that cats have a positive impact on the whole range of mental and physical disorders in humans. For example, many owners of cats rarely suffer from depression, have lower cholesterol and rarely go to the doctor.
When cats purr, they produce vibration whose frequency is between 20 and 140 Hz. It is proved that such vibrations have a therapeutic effect on people, and it is interesting that they strengthen bone structure.
Another study, which was recently conducted by Dr. Karen Allen of the State University of Newyork showed that cats are more effective in reducing hypertension caused by stress of drugs prescribed for this purpose.

The study was performed on a group of brokers, whose occupation involves daily exposure to stress, all of which are suffering from hypertension.
The group is divided into two parts, the first part have adopted a cat or a dog, while the second one are left without a pet. Lisinopril was prescribed as a therapy to all of them, which is used to prevent stress-induced hypertension.
A control was performed after six months and the results were astounding.
Brokers from the first group had less increasing of blood pressure when they were exposed to stress than those in the second group, which leads to the conclusion that cats are more effective than an inhibitor that modern medicine prescribe for this condition.
Even the psychological effect of cats over people is not negligible. Studies dealing with this issue have shown that cats have a positive impact on the psyche of man by reducing aggression, increase empathy and the ability of learning.
