Some plant lovers keep their plants around the house so they can tidy their place up, other keep them so they can have fresh oxygen and be as surrounded by nature as possible.

However, plants are also good for other things as well.  Keeping plants around the house will also help you get rid of toxic particles in your air and mold.

The plant loving people at NASA have conducted a research on how domestic plants can affect the environment they are kept in, and they came up with amusing results.

According to them, there are certain plant types which are better at purifying air than others.

Not only they clean out various compounds that evaporate into the air, but they can also get rid of accumulated dust, dirt, or paint particles.


Here are 6 such plants that are great for keeping the air around your house as thresh as possible.

These Plants Are Oxygen Bombs

The Ficus, or Ficus Elastica is a beautiful and very easy-to-keep-alive plant, that can also do wonders for the air around your home. The Ficus is particularly effective in clearing formaldehyde particles from the air. However, as beautiful as it is, its leaves are poisonous, so you might want to keep it out of reach of children and animals.

The Snake Plant, apart from being very easy to keep, is also a very resistant plant that requires even the smallest light exposure to go into photosynthesis production. Such a plant is definitely a keeper, if you want to have an effortless and beautiful oxygen supplier. 

The Spider plant, or Chlorophytum Comosum, is a great plant for keeping the aesthetic appeal of your home, and keeping your air fresh.  The spider plant is very sensitive to light exposure, so even small sun rays can trigger its photosynthesis and fill your room with oxygen. It is also very effective in eliminating formaldehyde, CO, and styrene; in fact all you need is one plant to keep the air pure in a 200 m² space. 

Peace lilies, or Spathiphyllum Mauna Loa, is a plant famous for its sophisticated look and easy fragrance. Peace lilies are also great for keeping your air fresh and free of toxic and chemical particles.

The Aloe is one of the most potent oxygen producers, with a proven effectiveness that equals as many as 9 common air refreshers.  Also, it is a plant known for its beauty and its countless applications in skin and body care. 

The Ivy has up to 60% effectiveness in toxin elimination, as soon as six hours from being placed in a room. This and the relaxing ambiance it creates are one of the most common reasons the ivy is found in almost every household.    

As prescribed by NASA, the best way to exploit all the power of these plants is to make sure you have enough to cover your space.  All you need is 18 of any of these plants for an area of 500 m², or 4 for 80 m².
