Almost everyone remembers how old they were when they had their first period.
Well, now a study is claiming that the age you had your first period could provide you with information on how long you’ll live.
A study conducted with 16,000 women has revealed some surprising results!
The study was conducted by the University of California in San Diego, and it has found that people who started their periods later in life are more likely to reach 90 years old!
Studying data from the Women’s Health Initiative which followed the 16,000 postmenopausal women, Scientists found that people who had started their period after the age of 12 were likely to live longer.
The study also offered an insight into people’s lifespan based on the age they hit menopause…
People whose menopause hits later in life, after age 50, are also more likely to reach age 90.
Researchers admit they aren’t sure why the age you first get and stop your period affects life span.
Oddly, late starters and late stoppers were less likely to smoke or have diabetes.
The lead of the study, Aladdin Shadyab said:
“Our team found that women who started menstruation at a later age were less likely to have certain health issues, like coronary heart disease, and those who experienced menopause later in life were more likely to be in excellent health overall, which may be a possible explanation for our findings.
Factors, such as smoking, can damage the cardiovascular system and ovaries, which can result in earlier menopause.
Women with later menopause and a longer reproductive lifespan may have decreased risk of cardiovascular diseases.”
